Esme and Connor watched Olivia leave, then they exchanged a look. Esme whispered, âThat didnât go well, from the looks of it.â
Connor shook his head. âRelationships.â
âTheyâre not always easy.â
Connor raised his eyebrows. âI wouldnât know. Iâve never really had one.â
Esme suppressed her shock.
He looked at her as though heâd heard her thoughts. âItâs not like I set out to be a dating loser.â
âYouâre not!â
âPlease. I am fully aware of what I am.â
âAnd whatâs that?â
âA nerd. No, donât try to argue the point.â
âBut youâre not a nerd or a loser! Youâre amazingââ She stopped just short of revealing her feelings then lowered her voice. âYouâre an amazing guy.â
âYeah, thatâs what my dates all say before they tell me itâs not working out.â
Her eyes softened. âDatingâs hardâso Iâve heard. I havenât been on one lately.â
âYou could try the dating app I use.â
Esme grimaced. âIâm not a dating app type.â
Connor shrugged. âIf it werenât for dating apps, I wouldnât have any dates.â
âYeah, but⦠never mind.â
âI know. It hasnât worked yet, but itâs only a matter of time.â
Esme wanted to agree, but she couldnât.
Connor said, âIâm sure youâd have better luck. Youâre not socially awkward like I am.â
âWhat are you talking about? I love talking to you. Youâre an interesting guy!â
âIâm an interesting guy to talk with sitting in a bar, but dating-wise, I just havenât had enough practice. While everyone else was perfecting their game, I was in a library study carrel with my nose in medical books. Now look at me.â
Esme did look at him like she had so many times, from his neatly trimmed light-brown hair to the tortoiseshell glasses that brought out the green in his eyes. They were soft and impossibly deep, like the sea. She could drown in those eyes. She realized she was staring and meant to avert her eyes, but her gaze drifted down to his mouth.
Her lips parted. Barely able to breathe, she said, âYou donât need any practice. Youâre you. Thatâs enoughâmore than enough!â She drew in a breath, afraid sheâd said too much.
Connor chuckled. âTell that to my dates.â
Esme smiled gently. âIt canât be that bad.â
âOh, it can.â
âIâm sure there are plenty of women whoâd love to date you.â
âGreat, give me their phone numbers.â
She recited her own in her mind then looked into his eyes. âYouâll find your perfect someone. In the meantime, youâve got me to talk to.â She smiled cheerfully to hide her true feelings.
With a gentle smile, Connor thanked her. âIf Iâm honest, itâs not always my fault.â
âOf course not!â
Connor hesitated. âI never talk about it. Iâm not sure why Iâm telling you, except maybe itâs like therapy. It helps to talk it out.â
âIâm a bartender, which makes me practically a registered professional therapistâabsent the legal registration.â
Connor humored her with a nod. âMy last date, SaturdayâIâve been trying to forget it. Another dating app meeting, but we had something. She was smart, funny, and pretty.â
âOf course.â Esme tried not to smirk.
âWe chatted for almost an hour.â He shook his head helplessly.
